25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FACULTY OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES, UNIVERSITY OF TUZLA

Humanities and Social Sciences at the Crossroads:

Call for Papers

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Tuzla, is pleased to announce the second international conference in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Faculty. The conference Humanities and Social Sciences at the Crossroads will take place in Tuzla, 27-28 April, 2018.

SCOPE OF THE CONFERENCE

Humanities and social sciences at universities around the world face a twofold challenge. In the context of intensive reforms that, under the guise of austerity measures, require universities to transform themselves from knowledge centers into profit centers, these doctrines have been put in a defensive position: to defend themselves by proving their financial justification. Another challenge to these sciences is to respond to the effects created by governance through insecurity, such as maintaining a constant crisis: from the privatization of public goods and the precarization of jobs to new conflicts that, for profit, destabilize and destroy social and economic networks and against violence are pushing for the escape of an ever-growing population.

At the center of the discussion on the challenges of humanities and social sciences is the question: what kind of society do we want? The elites that govern the states formed by the breakup of Yugoslavia have created such conditions of poverty and social injustice that an increasing number of young people are leaving these countries because they do not see their future in them. It can be claimed that the responsibility for such a situation is largely borne by what is called the international community.

Also, in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the countries formed after the breakup of Yugoslavia, many locally specific crossroads represent challenges to social and humanistic doctrines, and not only from the sphere of politics, but primarily in the sphere of cultural-identity (re) configurations reflected in this scientific discourse quite intense or rarely from reductive visions.

However, humanities and social sciences have both theories and methods to successfully address these challenges. These sciences also have a tradition of placing the right to social transformation that produces equality and solidarity in the struggle for the public good. It is a tradition of the uncompromising and courageous production of politically relevant knowledge, which discovers those social interests and classes that draw strength and profit from ghettoization, persecution and oppression.

The aim of this conference is to bring together the academic, artistic and activist community in a joint consideration of interventions in humanistic and social science for the production of relevant knowledge, public good and emancipatory social transformation. We invite all interested individuals as well as institutions to send abstracts of their scientific and artistic interventions.
